VERRES S.p.A., manufacturer for thirty years of blanks and rings for coinage, both for the Zecca (Italian State Mint) and analogous foreign institutes, confirms, on the basis of the results obtained, its basic choices regarding the issues raised in previous editions (1992 and 1997) on the "Quality Policy" extending its systematic goals also to aspects of safety at work and the environment.
In 1993 VERRES S.p.A. adopted, as a natural evolution of its pre-existing quality management, a Quality System in conformity with the requirements of UNI EN ISO 9002:1987, and in 1994 it obtained the Bureau Veritas certification, renewed in 1998 in connection to the 1994 edition of the same standard.
During the planning stage of renewing the Quality System certification and its adaptation to the 2000 edition of this standard, VERRES S.p.A. was committed to developing an Integrated System from which it could obtain and maintain the certification for Quality (second UNI EN ISO 9001:2000), Safety (second OHSAS 18001:1999) and the Environment (second UNI EN ISO 14001:1996).
The reorganisation of VERRES S.p.A. management for Quality, Safety and the Environment underwent the phases explained concisely as follows:
  • conversion from QMS ISO 9002:94 to ISO 9001:00
  • construction SMS (OHSAS 18001) and EMS (ISO 14001)
  • integration in the IS of QMS, SMS, and EMS and operational application of same
  • certification QMS, SMS and EMS
  • maintenance and development of the IS through a process of continuous improvement.

The subsystem certifications were obtained on the following dates: QMS 5/2002, SMS and EMS 8/2002 and reached their natural expiry dates in 2005.
The management at VERRES S.p.A., on the strength of the results obtained during the first application and an integrated examination of the quoted subsystems, confirms its willingness to maintain and develop these subsystems and go ahead with their new certification bearing in mind the need to update the EMS in connection with standard UNI EN ISO 14001:2004.
The three subsystems were recertified in August 2005.

To achieve this goal, the organisation confirmed and still confirms the following lines of the "Integrated QSE Policy".

Quality, Safety and Environment are essential factors for the growth and development of an organisation.
The Integrated System (IS) can be considered as an integrated coexistence of the three subsystems:

  • Quality Subsystem, giving particular emphasis to the production processes
  • Safety Subsystem, giving particular emphasis to man
  • Environment Subsystem, giving particular emphasis to the ecosystem.
These interact in areas and problems that are partially common within the company.
The Company System, according to the integrated perspective, acquires from the market as input:
  • Raw materials
  • Energy
  • All the various resources necessary for company needs
and manages the use, processing and transformation, turning the elements of input into correlated products and services, but at the same time producing various types of wastes and emissions almost throughout the entire production cycle.
To obtain safe and reliable products, controlled environmental impacts and satisfactory services reducing and/or eliminating the health risks for its employees, VERRES S.p.A. must work incessantly at all levels to continuously improve its general organisation, company internal processes and its suppliers, to offer products that satisfy growing customer expectations and meet their needs. The company’s efforts and resources must be aimed at conducting all its activities according to the criteria of quality, safety and environment laid out by the IS documents so they prove to conform, and continue to do so in the future, with legal and other applicable prescriptions regarding environmental aspects and those of safety and hygiene at work.

In particular, the goals that the Management proposes to reach are:

  • improve management results
  • achieve better levels of competitiveness
  • obtain full customer satisfaction
  • reduce overall operating costs
  • train and make all personnel aware of the importance of the observance of the contents and prescriptions of the QSE system
  • abide by laws, standards and regulations and other applicable legally binding directions
  • limit the use of natural resources through greater environmental awareness of the processes carried out
  • adopt all solutions economically bearable in order to reduce the company’s environmental impacts on water and atmospheric resources
  • prevent all types of land pollution
  • carry out an in-depth evaluation, during the preliminary stage, of the environmental repercussions of every company process
  • eliminate risk factors for the health and safety of workers and, where not possible, reduce residual risks to a minimum
  • prevent accidents at work and occupational illnesses.

The data from the processes implemented concerning company goals must be processed so the Management can make an evaluation from which the necessary continuous improvements of can be applied.
For this purpose, the Management has appointed the QSE position of "Management Representative" to:

  • promote awareness of customer needs and of all parties involved within the sphere of the entire company
  • assure that necessary IS processes are identified, managed with targeted, prepared documents and kept up-to-date
  • report to the Management on the performance of the IS.
In order to manage all the activities stemming from QSE, the technical support of the following positions will be used: Quality Control (QC) for aspects concerning Quality, Safety Representative (SR) for aspects concerning the safety of workers and the Technical Department (TD) for aspects regarding the Environment.
The Management is committed, also by delegating Heads of Department where applicable, to supporting every decision reached by QSE within the sphere of problems relating to Quality, Safety and the Environment; furthermore it formally assures that suitable initiatives shall be taken so that the Integrated System set up is understood, implemented, maintained and improved at all company levels.
The "QSE Integrated Policy"
All persons employed by or on behalf of the organisation will be familiarised with the "Integrated QSE Policy" by means of circulation of the QSEM to all company functions concerned and/or display on company noticeboards and made available to all the parties concerned who request a copy.
